Introduction

Since 1996, the European Workshop on the seismic behaviour of Irregular and Complex Structures (EWICS) has been taking place every three years under the auspices of Working Group (WG) 8 (Seismic Behaviour of Irregular and Complex Structures) of EAEE. The last Workshop, held in 2011 in Haifa, has about 40 papers included in the proceedings published by Springer. Its success confirms the interest of scientific community in the covered topics.

We are pleased to announce that the Seventh Workshop (7EWICS). It will be held in Opole (Poland) on October 17-18, 2014 and will be hosted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Opole University of Technology. 7EWICS, as the previous workshops, will provide a stimulating forum for discussions and a convivial atmosphere in which to make new contacts and renew old friendships. Additionally, 7EWICS will be a forum to include so called “paraseismic” effects on irregular structures (traffic induced vibrations, mine tremors, blast effects etc.).

The Polish Group of Seismic and Paraseismic Engineering chaired by prof. Tadeusz Tatara from Cracow University of Technology was initiated in 1994 by late prof. Roman Ciesielski, an outstanding Polish specialist in structural dynamics and civil engineering. The Group brings together Polish engineers and scientists specializing in seismic engineering as well as seismic-like effects on structures.

Workshop Themes:

  • Asymmetric single storey buildings;
  • Asymmetric multistorey buildings (frames, walls, wall-frames);
  • Vertically irregular structures;
  • Setback multistorey buildings;
  • Control of irregular structures;
  • Particular cases of irregularity in structures;
  • Architectural and design issues
  • Rotational and spatial effects in seismology and engineering
  • Response of irregular structures to “paraseis-mic” excitations
